Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these medications must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
