Prime Television Selections: Seven Must-Watch Motion Pictures This Coming Week

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary examines the oppressive nature of women's appearance as well as the dreaded aspects of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a masterful acting turn playing Elisabeth, a mature actress reduced to hosting an aerobics show on the small screen. Pushed out thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes an enigmatic and terrifying treatment titled "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, resulting in a progressively parasitic dynamic among both women. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful story includes Knightley as Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take a hiatus from writing about global conflict to join an opulent ship alongside a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her spouse, as well as other filthy rich guests. Yet once an unknown lady falls into the sea overnight and everyone insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Streaming currently, on Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh challenges his creative boundaries through this clever paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their recent residence, the lens – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like guarding her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist you might not see coming. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage fully commits to his unique fame in this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed celebrity named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to attend a festive event at a Mediterranean location for the rich superfan Javi. Hired by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. October 11th, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective even without a continuation. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, multiple child abductions has left the children on edge. When Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and held captive in a cellar, he dreads a fatal end. But the old telephone on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, as the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, late evening, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky true story about the fallen religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who declares initially, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though Jessica Chastain achieves to show the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, late night, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

This week's additional entry by the same director presents a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks sported by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked to discover a mole among the team from a group of five – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of understated style, so a delicious mental battle of fact versus fiction develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, various showings, the Sky channel
