The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, prompting him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
